So today Wyd 2016 officially began. I had my first squishy tram ride, my first experience of Fr Rob singing, the first use of our meal vouchers and my first walk to a major event.
The day started with the Aussie Gathering. What a charged up excoriated. Singing, dancing and reflecting. It is great to do it the Aussie way with our sense of humour and way of praying. The atmosphere was electric. The year of youth, in 2018, was announced and included a shot of the wyd cross at the 12 Apostles. I felt so proud to see our Diocesan event up there.
This afternoon we had the opening mass. We set off on a thunder storm. So random after such a warm morning. Ponchos were including in the wyd packs and we got blue, so there were a lot of smurfs getting around. We ate in such a great location here that it only took about an hour for us to navigate through the crowds and get into our sector. It was exhilarating to be there to witness the crowd building and see the Victorian group grow as the small groups wandered in. With me radio tuned to the English channel I was ready for action. The crowd was beautiful. When it time come to go to communion everyone waiting patiently and was mindful of those around them. It was a fitting start to the weeks events. The sun even came out for the Mass.
It was fantastic to see those who haven't been to a wyd getting so much from the experience. They have now had a taste for themselves instead of hearing about it.
I love the expression of the universal church. We had French people beside us and flags from countless countries waved proudly.
Afterwards everyone was so happy. There was plenty of high fives as we made our way home. Wyd has now begun.
